You came for a map API and the top-ranked result was a Spanish company registry

You have a simple job this week. Your team needs a forecast feed and a mapping provider, and you open the Weather & Geospatial page on APIs.io to see who leads. The vertical lists 737 providers on its live page. The highest Kin Score belongs to OpenMercantil, at 76.4.

You click through. OpenMercantil is a public-data API for Spanish company intelligence. It is not a weather service and it is not a mapping platform. The reason it sits at the top is that one of its 35 tags is Geocoding, and the catalog's tag-based membership counted that as enough.

The post you are reading is APIs.io being direct about this. The API deserves its score, it says, but it does not belong at the top of this vertical. The tag-based membership put it there, and the fix is the catalog's to make.

So the headline rank is not much help to you. The numbers around it are more useful. Across 736 scored members, the median Kin Score is 15.2 and the median Agent Readiness score is 3.1. There are 12 exemplars and 39 strong providers, against 150 emerging and 310 minimal. 386 are human-only. A typical provider here is thin, which makes the few deep ones easy to miss when you sort by overall score.

The post suggests cutting by function instead. In maps and location, 575 providers are tagged, with a median Kin Score of 17.3. Esri leads at 74.1 Kin and 43.6 Agent, and HERE follows at 72.2 and 55.1. Amazon Location Service scores 67.4 and 31.6, and Wherobots, for spatial analytics, scores 65.3 and 27.9.

For your forecast feed, the Weather tag has 130 providers and a median of 19.9. But the top of that tag is HERE, then Cracked, a tool router for agents, then Dynamic Feed, a live-data layer. Weather is a line item for them. APIFreaks and APIVerve also rank in the top eight. Smarter Weather, the highest provider the post would call a weather company from its record, comes fourth at 66.8 Kin and 53.6 Agent. The Met Office scores 62.9 and 29.8. The post also points to OpenWeatherMap at 61.3, Tomorrow.io at 57.6 and Atmospore at 57.0.

You also notice other odd entries when you scroll. RoxyAPI, a spiritual intelligence API covering Western astrology and more, ranks eighth through the tag Location. SPOTIO is field sales software, tagged Geospatial for territory mapping. SewerAI builds software for underground infrastructure and is tagged GIS. The post calls the sewer and sales cases fair uses of location data, but says that together they crowd the view for anyone who came for mapping.

If you also care about satellite imagery, the post warns that earth observation has the data and the thinnest contracts. Its 119 tagged providers have a median Kin Score of 16.0, the lowest of the three cuts, and a median agent score of 3.1. A few break out: emem sits at 58.6 Kin and 52.3 Agent, Umbra at 60.5 and 45.6, and BlackSky at 42.3 and 37.4. The Public APIs tag shows a similar pattern, with 107 members and a median of 5.2.

Then comes the part where the catalog files something against itself. Skyboximaging and Terra Bella (fka Skybox Imaging) are two records of what their own names say is one company. Both are tagged Defunct and both score 0.0. The API counts do not agree either: the page says 4,072, members list 4,096 API entries, and their api_count fields sum to 1,304. You would not have caught that from the ranking, and the post does not hide it.

By now you know what to do. For maps, the post says to use Esri or HERE. For weather, Smarter Weather or the Met Office. For spatial analytics, Wherobots. For imagery work built around agents, Umbra or emem.

What you take away is a habit. The first row of a tag-built vertical can be right about the API and wrong about the vertical. This one has real depth, and its overall rank does not surface it. Filter by function before you trust the leaderboard, and note that the catalog told you where its own numbers do not line up.
